General Tips for Choosing an Engineering School
There are many great engineering schools out there and it can be difficult to choose which is the best fit for you. For example, some universities only offer a Bachelor of Science in Engineering whereas others offer dual degrees with an undergraduate degree in something else. It’s important that you research as many schools as possible so that you can find the one that will suit your needs, your career goals and your personality best.
Here are some tips that we hope can help you make a great decision:
Do your research. There are many different schools out there and it’s important that you know all about them before making a choice. Start by checking the school’s admission requirements, their academics, and their location which will help to narrow down the schools to some manageable options. Make sure that the school has a prestigious ranking from an accreditation body such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) for example. You can also do some research about job opportunities after graduation if that’s what you’re aiming for.
Talk to someone who has been through the process before. Do a quick search of Reddit for the school you’re considering and see if anyone with experience has already posted about their experience. This can give you an idea of what to expect.
Consider your career goals. Before going through the application process, it’s important that you know what degree program will work best for your career goals. It’s also important that you know whether or not you will be able to obtain a job in the field after graduation since this is still an important aspect of choosing an engineering school. You should also take into account how much stress or anxiety you may experience both during and after college as well as how much time it takes to complete your courses.
Make sure you can afford it. Just because you get accepted into a school doesn’t mean that you’ll be able to pay for it. You should research the cost of tuition, the financial aid opportunities and whether or not the school has any scholarships or grants available.
Check out the location. Deciding on a location can be difficult because there are so many factors that affect where you will want to live during college. For example, if you know that you want to get a job in an urban setting after graduation then it’s more likely that an urban campus will be more appealing than one in conservative rural area would be.
Check out the general vibe of the school. It’s important that you take a look at how many people are applying and how they rate the school on review websites such as Yelp before applying. On average, this university has an overall rating of 3 out of 5 stars, and has been reviewed by 2 students with the majority offering 1 or 2 out of 5 stars. On a positive note, this university has a relatively high number of alumni and was named among America’s Best Colleges in 2009 by Forbes Magazine.
